VIDEO: HAYDEN ON DRONES
4/27/11
HAYDEN: "ISR platforms" - use term so as not to confuse, "tremendous platforms, tremendous for today's problems..." "exquisite knowledge" (exquistite "inteliigence" earlier? - YES, said that)
Gen Michael Hayden, Principal of the Chertoff Group and former Director of the Central Intelligence Agency, praised the 'affordable endurance' of UASs. 'We like the ability to unblinkingly stare' he said. 'We can now do it reasonably well within our current chequebook.'
However, he was cautious about accurately predicting a future role for UAVs in US military strategy. He considered UAV surveillance capabilities to be 'absolutely optimal for the current war', yet warned that 'the future is never a straight line from the past...it would be wrong for us to now extrapolate in the future the experience of the past.' He outlined a future in which the current environment, 'permissive' to UAVs, may not exist, and spoke of the need to consider the impact of increasing use of UAVs on other ISR systems. He also warned of burgeoning debates regarding the ethics and legality of 'this new way of war'.
